Camping in Ontario for free…?

Posted by: masterqtkd | Comments (2)

I’m looking for a place in Ontario (the closer to Toronto, the better) where I can go hiking and camp for free – like it doesn’t have to be a “camp site”, the middle of the woods/off a trail is more what I had in mind, I just want to make sure it’s legal (and free).

I was looking at areas of Bruce Trail and I found mixed information – there’s a section near Terra Cotta that seems to be free camping “on an overnight basis” for backpackers, which I don’t know if that means 1 night or just you can’t hang out with your tent there during the day – and another area that seemed to imply it was free said there was a fee on a different site- I’m confused. Can you only camp in the conservation areas (which seem to cost $ of you aren’t a member) or can you camp anywhere along the trail (off the trail) that doesn’t say not to? (Obviously practicing leave-no-trace and not building fires, etc)

Can anyone clarify these rules for me, or does anyone know about Bruce Trail and the sections near Toronto specifically? Or, if you understand what I’m looking for, could you make a recommendation? I’m trying to keep it within and hour or 2 driving distance from Toronto.

THANK YOU!!

First of all: Happy first day of summer!!! XDXD

It was only the 1st day of Survivor: Sicily and there were already 2 extremely close votes! For team Acquazzone, Leander Paes barely survived after a 5-3 vote knocked Santiago Giraldo out of the competition. After a 4-1-3 vote for team Fuoco di Inferno, Max Minryi has been voted off.

After the mellow-dramatic tribal council, all the contestants were escorted to a tent to celebrate the new season. When they entered the tent they saw a shiny kareoke machine. Andy Roddick was the first to partake in this, singing Elton John’s “Rocketman” and bringing tears to the eyes of Steffi Graf after he wooed his fellow contestants playing the piano and singing the chorus. Ana Ivanovic and Aravane Rezai chose to make the party more entertaining, so they sang “Milkshake”! All the men went crazy as Rezai and Ivanovic strutted their stuff, wearing gold bikinis (haha). Next was a quartet of Gael Monfils, Daniel Nestor, Fernando Verdasco, and Leander Paes. Their song: Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”. For 5min and 55sec they sang with passion, leading into the famous operatic portion. Once Daniel Nestor started with the line “I see a little sillhouetto of a man” the crowd erupted into a frenzy and roses and sea horses (sea horses?!?) were flying everywhere! After their performance, they took their bows and everyone continued the festivites by eating and drinking.

Once the two teams went into their respective locations after the party, they had to build a camp. Melinda Czink and Liezel Huber helped Andy Roddick as Ilie Nastase and Sam Stosur collected wood for the fire. Meanwhile, Gilles Simon went fishing and caught a Marlin. He returned to the beach glistening and waving his hair as Agnieszka looked at him with wide eyes…his trunks fell off! She quickly got her camera and took a picture (fifteen actually) before Simon finally found an olive branch to hide his genitals. Everything’s going well for team Fuoco di Inferno, except for Gilles. On team Acquazzone, Jurgen Melzer went hunting and found a rhinocerous (what the hell was that doing there?) and brought it back to the camp, where they cooked it. Schiavone and Safina were collecting wood for the camp, as Safina trailed off on her own to find the hidden Immunity Idol. She hides it somewhere and returns to camp. Everyone else is doing their own thing, except for Ivanovic and Verdasco, who seem to have rekindled their relationship….

calling all vegetarians!! I need your help. So I am going on a camping trips with my friends.. and I am a (NEW) vegetarian, they all bought hamburgers and hot dogs and other meat to cook over the fire while cooking, I assume there will be grills at the campsite too ( i hope) anyways I have no idea what to bring to eat. I will be there 3 days, I need something easy and vegetarian friendly to bring camping. I know you will all say veggie burgers, and yes i will get some veggie burgers, but that will get old fast for lunch and dinner every night. (besides I’m not that big of fan of veggie burgers b/c they try to make them taste like a real burger, and the idea of tasting meat disgusts me!) I like Californian veggie burgers better (taste more like a veggie patty instead of a burger) so if anyone knows any other good brands that is more like a veggie patty and not burger tasting let me know.. and any other suggestions of food to take camping would be awesome! thanks!

Some help with camping skills?

Posted by: masterqtkd | Comments (7)

I’m a college male who is a little on the old side to join something like the boy scouts, however I would still love to learn some of the unique trivia and lesser-known skills of camping (I’m talking about backpacking or survivalist style camping, not car or camp site camping). These skills could be anything from how to create a make-shift shelter, build a fire (and cook on it (maybe even without cookware)), learn how to tie knots and there uses, foraging and hunting food, or anything in between.

So, I’m asking for any recommendations on reading material, websites, or videos as well as any personal advice that you would like to share. (My goal is to eventually get to a “survivalist” style where I need to take only the bare essentials (yes, I know this will take many years to get to).)

Thanks for all your help.
