What Will Happen If I Put A Freshwater Pet Fish Into A Lake, Pond, River, Etc?
ByI just want to know what will happen to the ecosystem of the body of water. Is that really a good idea? will that harm the fish? Remember that the fish has spent its whole like in a tank.

the introduced european carp causes $1.2million damage to inland rivers every year here in australia.
other”Pet fish” that were introduced to australia by irresponsible citisens include
talapia
trout
carp
redfin
gambusia
guppies
koi
goldfish
pencil fish
archerfish
red devils
oscars
silver sharks
3spot cichlid
peacock cichlid
the list goes on and on….
all of them competing or in the case of the above out competing the already threatened native species.
i urge you to please act responsibly for the fish and the other creatures dependant on the ecosystem.
pet shops always want free fish.
for them its easy profit.
dont just dump them to starve or endanger other piscatorial species.

The fish could damadge the ENTIRE ecosystem as long as the fish doesnt get eaten. However even small fish could destroy or eat beneficial bacteria or something like that. If the fish is on the medium to large side, such as a cichlid it could eat small fish that in turn feed larger fish. It is a bad idea but it probably won’t harm the fish unless the body of water is temporary and evaporates.

Pet fish means, it’s never had to go find food for itself. Just waits for “the hand” to sprinkle flakes once a day.
Putting one pet fish into a lake won’t affect the lake. Most likely, something will eat the fish, or the fish will die from the shock, or get sick. Either way, it won’t last long.
Also, if your fish is a tropical fish, most lakes/ponds here are too cold for it, so the fish wouldn’t last long.
Honestly, if you don’t want your fish anymore, just put it up for adoption on Craigslist. You’ll get plenty of interested fish-friendly folks who will be happy to give your fish a good home.

Generally VERY illegal.
Two possible things wil happen, most likely your fish just gets eaten.
or Worse, they survive, multiply and kill off the native fish and other critters.
Dont release aquarium fish into the wild. The end result is that more restrictons get put on what fish can be imported because idiots keep letting them go.

Don’t do it, 1st off it’s illegal, 2nd your pet would probably die, depending on what kind it is, and most importantly if it breeds it will screw up a whole lotta s***. So if your tired of your fish, give them to someone else who wants them.

You should go read about people who stock invasive plants and animals in any water that is connected to wild waters.
Hopefully the wild fish will get to your pet fish and make lunch out of it before it might find other fish to breed with.

It’s really illegal, I can tell you that. If you were to do that, the fish could end up just dying, or it could end up harming native species of fish.

The fish will probably die. It doesn’t know how to get food. And it’s used to living in clean water with chemicals keeping it clean.
